Nuclei & Mitochondria (TEM)
Nuclei, the defining feature of eukaryotic cells, serve as the cellular compartment housing chromosomes. Mitochondria, often referred to as the powerhouses of eukaryotic cells, are equally fundamental. These double membrane-bound organelles are familiar to all cell biologists from textbook diagrams and electron micrographs. However, they remain notoriously challenging to automatically segment in electron micrographs, where numerous organelles exhibit similar staining characteristics and display highly variable shapes and sizes.
Traditionally, studying organelle ultrastructure relied on slow, labor-intensive manual segmentation (Perez et al., 2014). The Image-Pro pre-trained Nuclei TEM and Mitochondria TEM deep learning models solve this problem. Used alone or with the Nuclei and Mitochondria (EM) protocol, these tools enable fast, accurate TEM data analysis—even for users with little to no image analysis experience.
